Dorsoduro
Litteraly, Dorsoduro means Hard Back. Which, translated, means that the soil was harder than elsewhere, and it was relatively easy to settle here, sticking trillions of tree trunks deep down in the mud. The connection between Dorsoduro and woodwork is still very tight, infact near the romantic Zattere (rafts) you can still see carpenters at work building a gondola!
But Dorsoduro is also the district of art. Venetian and international. A few names? Peggy Guggenheim, Francois Pinault, Emilio Vedova. And, of course, the Academia Gallery. A tour in Dorsoduro is perfect in November, when we celebrate the end of one of the worst epidemies of plague with a huge celebration in the church of Salute.
